MVCCT was founded in 1980 as a not-for-profit organization to provide area youth with quality theatrical experiences that are educational, creative, engaging and supportive. Through the use of hands-on learning of the theatrical arts, MVCCT offers children, ages 5-18, the opportunity to enhance their development---building self-confidence, character, self-expression, autonomy and responsibility.
MVCCT strives to stimulate and enhance the cultural life of young people by offering a creative outlet that helps them to develop poise, independence, and accountability through self-expression. Numerous studies clearly indicate the value of arts education in contributing to the emotional and educational development of young people. Research has shown that participation in arts activities is linked to higher academic performance, more community service, a higher level of self-confidence and discipline, and improved social skills.
Mount Vernon Community Children’s Theatre's primary goal is to enhance the cultural life of the Northern Virginia area by offering a stimulating, creative, and supportive outlet to children and youth, helping them build self confidence and character, while developing self expression, independence, and responsibility.
MVCCT's programs are twofold: each year three to four productions are presented, directed by professionals and featuring children in all roles. Additionally MVCCT has an active education program which includes 1. After-School programs in Fairfax County Public Schools (both PTA sponsored and outreach/grant based); 2. Spring Break Camp; and 3. Summer Camp.
MVCCT is committed to reaching those who may not be able to afford the tuition for productions, classes and camps by offering need-based scholarships to qualified participants. All of this is accomplished by a volunteer board of directors with the support of only three year-round paid staff members, professional contracted employees, and a host of parent volunteers. The 'community' in the name of the organization is truly reflective of how MVCCT functions.
The success of MVCCT is largely due to the enormous support we receive from the community and we wish to thank the many people who have contributed to this effort. To the parents who drive their children to and from classes and rehearsals and to those volunteers who perform a myriad of tasks which include sewing costumes, building sets, selling refreshments and cleaning up when it's all over - thank you. Additionally, we acknowledge those financial supporters who provide the resources we need to survive.
